Intuition

Leadership and the management of projects is based upon facts and solid data.
However, there are times when just considering bear facts can limit your performance.
A good leader has the knack of knowing when to pursue certain issues and when to modify plans.
This intuition seems more acute in some people compared to others.

What might appear to be intuition could be the rapid assessment of many years of experience and knowledge gained.

Whatever the explanation intuition is a vital tool in the armoury of the best leaders.

People skills

Motivation is high on the agenda of any leader.
How can you do this?
For many this will be met by a list of ‘ideas’ which are tried and assessed.
This is not a bad process, at least the leader is considering motivational techniques.
However, the best leaders have natural feel in their dealings with people that gives them an insight into how they tick.
This ability gives the leader a great advantage when considering motivational options [see The Complete Motivation package].
The leader will be able visualise the end result ahead of implementation.

Many leaders will hone these skills over time based upon their experiences.

Self analysis

If you believe that you have no faults, have reached a peak in your leadership skills and cannot learn any more your leadership skills are already on the wane.
The good leaders will constantly assess their own position and successes and make necessary changes.

Positive thinking

The ability to assess a situation better than the next person can often lead to exploitation of opportunities.
Where one person sees a hurdle the better leader might often see advantage.

Realisation of these abilities and honing them can turn a good leader into a great one.
Good leaders, through positive thinking, can visualise the benefits of their vision.

They don’t dwell on the negative aspects.
These are merely problems that will require a solution.

If you have no desire to embrace a vision of adapt to achieve a goal you will not make a leader.

If leadership is just a set of rules then anyone could reach the appropriate levels.
The best leaders embrace the key ideas and build on them.

This is covered in more detail elsewhere [see The vision].
