Leadership - FIRO-B©

FIRO-B©

Background

FIRO-B© stands for.

Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation – Behaviour.

It was developed in the 1950’s as tool for personal understanding as a help in relations with others and teams.

The questionnaire

It measures.

Expressed Behavior (E)

What a person prefers to do, and how much that person wants to initiate action.

Wanted Behavior (W)

How much a person wants others to initiate action, and how much that person wants to be the recipient.

It is a 54 item questionnaire that measures 3 fundamental dimensions of interpersonal relationships: inclusion, control and affection.

It’s big advantage is that it will produce results in typically 10 minutes.
This makes it ideal to use in one-on-one coaching and small groups.

It is not easy to distort the result with ‘acceptable answers’ as the score validity remains in tact.
The non-threatening content of the test items gets away from the marked test-taking anxiety associated with some psychological tests.

As in many personal understanding questionnaires there is no right or wrong answers.
The overall questionnaire leads to a better understanding of your personality.

The results

It is a tool that can aid understanding of individual personality dynamics, which includes behavior.
It has also found uses in.

  • Counseling.
  • Communication problems.
  • Management development.
  • Leadership development and preferred operating styles.
  • Sensitivity training.
  • Personal development.
  • Team building, development and effectiveness.
  • Career development.

It will always find uses in any environment where common goals are the target involving more than one person.
For example, assignment of employees to work groups for best efficiency and harmony.
