Reviewing benefits
Communication
The benefits reviews may highlight that:
- Some expected benefits were realized successfully
- Some expected benefits were not fully realized
- There were unplanned benefits (positive side effects)
- There were unplanned dis-benefits (negative side effects)
As the sole purpose of projects is to provide products that deliver benefits to the organization, then the benefits performance is possibly the most valuable aspect from which to learn lessons.
The comparison of actual versus planned benefits and the root causes of any variations should be fed back into the corporate environment so that it can influence future investment decisions and project strategies.
